Charging and Discharging of a Capacitor, RC Circuits

When a capacitor in series with a resistor is connected to a DC source, opposite charges get accumulated on the two plates of the capacitor. We say the capacitor gets charged. The time taken to charge it to 63% of the maximum charge is called the time constant of the capacitor.

This circuit project will demonstrate to you how the voltage changes exponentially across capacitors in series and parallel RC (resistor-capacitor) networks. You will also examine how you can increase or …

Capacitors Physics A-Level

KEY POINT - The time constant, τ, of a capacitor charge or discharge circuit is the product of the resistance and the capacitance: τ = RC . τ is measured in s. The greater the values of R and C the longer the charge or discharge process takes.

Simple Equation for Capacitor Charging With RC Circuits

Now, let''s analyze the equation for capacitor charging process from the figure above. Assume that the capacitor (C) is in "fully-discharged" condition after we open the switch (S). It means there is no voltage in it.

Capacitor Charging Process (RC circuit)

When the "A" switch is closed, the current "I" suddenly increases to its maximum value (such in a short circuit) and has the value I = E/R amps. Then it gradually decreases until the current has a value of 0 "zero" amps, as shown in the diagram below. On the capacitor charging process, the voltage across the capacitor does not change instantly when it …
